Fire irons, also known as fireplace tools or hearth tools, are a set of utensils used for tending to a fire in a fireplace or wood-burning stove.

The most common types of fire irons include a poker, a shovel, a brush, and a pair of tongs. Our standard wrought iron fireside companion set contains these 4 essential tools on a handmade stand all perfectly set up for use – but our blacksmiths can easily tailor this set to best suit your needs should you require a different specific tool or utensil such as a toasting fork, log roller or ash scraper.

A poker is used to stir and rearrange the burning logs or coals in a fire to promote better airflow and maintain the fire's heat. Our poker is a sturdy and solid object with a handmade decorative finial at the top.

A shovel is used to remove ashes and debris from the fireplace or stove, keeping the area clean and preventing ash buildup. It’s important to ensure a fire is cleaned regularly to prevent excessive dust in the room and allows the fire to burn more effectively. Remember to allow a fire to fully die down and cool before cleaning to prevent risk of burn or melting any soft fabrics etc.

The brush is used to sweep away loose ash and dust, ensuring a tidy and safe environment around the fireplace or stove. Our handmade wrought iron hearth brush features a replaceable wooden head with coconut bristles – these hardwearing bristle won’t melt like some plastic brushes do although they will naturally wear down over time but are easily replaced to maintain the use of the brush.

Tongs are used to pick up and reposition logs or fuel in the fire without the need to touch them directly, ensuring safe and controlled adjustments. We forge a one piece tong with a sprung steel action rather than a hinge, this allows better one handed operation of the tool to grasp your coals or logs.

Fire irons are essential for fire safety as they allow you to maintain and control the fire from a safe distance, minimizing the risk of burns or accidents. They also help keep the area around the fire clean and free from hazards. We believe our wrought iron fire irons and fireside tools are a good balance of form and function and will last a lifetime. If you require a bespoke option, for example an extra long poker to use in your outdoor firepit, please contact us to arrange a quote.

Yes, some additional accessories include a log holder or basket to store firewood, available in our home and garden section on the website. Or perhaps you might need a fire screen to protect against sparks – especially important in open fires where children or pets are present: And finally a bellows are quite traditional for providing additional oxygen to the fire although many good woodburning stoves now encompass an airflow control system to do this.

our handmade Fire irons are forged from wrought iron which is both tough and durable and will last a lifetime if used correctly.

To maintain your fire irons, regularly clean off any soot or ash, check for signs of rust, and lubricate any moving parts. Store them in a dry place when not in use to prevent corrosion.

While fire irons are primarily designed for indoor fireplaces and stoves, some of the tools, such as tongs and pokers, can be used for outdoor fires like campfires. However, it's essential to clean and maintain them afterward, as exposure to outdoor elements can lead to rust.
