Curtain Pole Measuring Guide

1. How to measure for a traditional curtain pole – standard wall fitting with two finials [ Use section 4 for solid cottage poles ]

To order the exact length of pole you need, measure the width of your window – then add 10cm* to either side to allow space for your curtain drawback. Give us this total figure for your pole length.

Please take your measurement in millimetres (mm) for our blacksmiths.

* 10cm (100mm) is our recommendation, this can be increased or decreased as desired, if you have particularly heavy or lightweight curtains for example. Please contact us with any queries on 01226 766618 or or email sales@nigeltyas.co.uk

Important note: Do not include the finials in your pole measurement. These are made separately and added with a simple grub screw fitting. We just need a measurement for the length of straight pole you need. (For your information, if you’d like to check what the full length of your assembled curtain pole will be, you can find the length of the finial you have chosen in its product specification.)

Don’t forget: Once you’ve measured the length of traditional pole you need – and you’ve decided what diameter of pole you would like – make sure you choose your brackets and finials, rings or hooks. You can also add accessories such as curtain holdbacks or tieback hooks. See our Guide to Ordering Curtain Poles for more information.

2. How to measure for a traditional curtain pole - with one finial and one end fitted to an adjacent wall

To order the exact length of pole you need, measure the distance from the wall to the far edge of the window then add 10cm* to allow room for your curtain drawback.

Important note: Do not include the finial in your pole measurement. This is made separately and added with a simple grub screw fitting. We just need a measurement for the length of straight pole you need. For your information, if you’d like to check what the full length of your assembled curtain pole will be, the length of each finial design is given in its product specification.

Don’t forget: Once you’ve measured the length of traditional pole you need – and you’ve decided what diameter of pole you would like – make sure you choose your brackets and finial and rings or hooks if required. You can also add accessories such as curtain holdbacks or tieback hooks. See our Guide to Ordering Curtain Poles for more information.

3. How to measure for a traditional curtain pole - within a recess fitting and without finials

wrought iron curtain pole measuring guide for double recess curtain pole by Nigel Tyas ironwork

To order the exact length of pole you need, simply measure the width of your recess from wall to wall - we will make the necessary adjustment to allow for the depth of the brackets and make your pole, complete with recess brackets, to fit perfectly in this space

Please take your measurement in millimetres (mm) for our blacksmiths.

Important note: Please take the measurement as close as possible to the position where you would like the pole to fit to the wall. It is surprising how much the width of a recess can vary from top to bottom and back to front, and this can be enough to prevent a precision made pole from fitting!

Don’t forget: Once you’ve measured the recess for your traditional pole – and you’ve decided what diameter of pole you would like – make sure you choose any additional support brackets needed for longer poles and rings or hooks if required. You can also add accessories such as curtain holdbacks or tieback hooks. See our Guide to Ordering Curtain Poles for more information.

4. How to measure for a solid cottage pole with two finials [ Use section 1 for traditional poles ]

To order the exact length of cottage pole you need, measure the width of your window – then add 12cm* either side to allow room for your curtain drawback. Give us this figure for your pole length.

* 12cm (120mm) is our recommendation, but this can be increased or decreased, depending on your preference for pole length; or if you have particularly heavy or lightweight curtains, for example.

We will use this measurement to hand-forge a solid cottage pole, adding the finials you have chosen. Please take your measurement in millimetres (mm) for our blacksmiths.

Important: Do not include the finials in your pole measure – we just need to know how much straight pole you need. If you’d like to know what the full length of your finished cottage pole including finial decoration will be, the length of each finial is listed in your cottage pole’s product specification.  We will also confirm the full length of your cottage pole in your order confirmation*.  (*Please remember, our products are made by hand, so there may be very slight variations in size.)
