FAQ: Metal Pendant Lighting

Metal pendant lighting refers to light fixtures that feature a metal shade or housing suspended from a forged steel ceiling plate or ‘ceiling rose’. These fixtures come in various styles, sizes, and finishes and are designed to provide both functional illumination and aesthetic appeal.

• Durability: Metal fixtures are sturdy and long-lasting.
• Versatility: They complement a wide range of interior styles.
• Focused Lighting: Pendant lights direct light downward, making them ideal for task lighting or highlighting specific areas.

Metal pendant lights can be used in almost any room of your home, including kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, bedrooms.

Consider the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. A general guideline is to choose a pendant with a maximum diameter of 1/3rd the room's width or shortest dimension. For higher ceilings, consider larger pendants or those with adjustable cord lengths such as our Broadstone or Springvale.

If you have experience with electrical work, you may be able to install pendant lights yourself. However, it's recommended to hire a professional electrician for safe and proper installation, especially if you're not familiar with electrical wiring. We try to make our items as simple to install as possible but the larger they are then the more difficult it can be and platforms or scaffold may be require for high ceilings.

Our ironwork is available in a traditional black waxed finish or a more contemporary light burnished steel finish. The electrical fittings used alongside the forged steel can be either brass, nickel or antique bronze and and we are happy to assist in specifying this for you. The finish you select should complement your room's decor. More information is available HERE.

Whilst some items would be OK for specific zones our interior lighting is not IP rated and therefore should be approved before use by a qualified electrician or architect. We don’t recommend using forged steel items in a damp or humid environment.

Dust the fixture regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Our natural black ironwork can be easily rewaxed with a good furniture polish or soft beeswax or similar item – We supply and recommend this WAX - available from us. Avoid abrasive cleaners or materials that may scratch the finish.

Yes, our metal pendant lights are compatible with dimmer switches providing the dimmer matches the LED bulbs being fitted. A dimmer is a great way of allowing you to adjust the light intensity to create different moods and ambiance. The key is to ensure you use a matched set of good quality modern LED bulbs to ensure you don’t get any issues with flickering that can be found with older LED and dimmer technology. For more information consult your electrician. The technical reasoning is that older LED and Dimmer technology is ‘leading edge’ dimming and has a minimum load of around 40 watts and as such if the load is not met, the flickering occurs. New technology is classed as ‘trailing edge dimming’ and when compatible dimmer switches are used with more modern LED bulbs the flickering is less likely to occur.

Remember that when choosing pendant lighting, it's essential to consider both functionality and aesthetics to achieve the desired lighting effect and style in your home.
