The Oxspring Table Lamp - A Collaboration With Ceramic Artist, Sarah Jones-Morris

Each month throughout the year, we want to give a deeper dive into our product range and showcase the skills and stories behind our designs.

As with many products here in the Nigel Tyas Showroom, The Oxspring desk lamp gets it's name from a local village or area. Oxspring is along the River Don, just past Penistone as the water flows down towards Sheffield and the city of Steel.

Designed as a simple yet functional desk lamp, this piece is available in a number of configurations to suit any home office or artist studio. A perfect size to grace the corner of a desk or work table, or just as a perfect reading lamp or bedside light.

Sarah has worked with us for many years at the forge, producing a number of handmade stoneware shades for various lamps and pendant lights. Our latest project, The Hordron, is also available now. Sarah's style involves forming clay from 'slabs' rather than on a wheel or coiling. It's an art form getting pieces to effectively stitch together - like flat pack furniture - and takes skill to work out just the right moisture levels in the clay to make it all stay in shape. The formed pieces are air dried before firing and glazing. Sarah can be found online (IG - @sjm_ceramics_) and at various art markets and events across the region.

Ceramic Oxspring Table Lamp

The handmade wrought iron lamp has a sturdy round steel base - choose from a radial fullered effect or a 'punched' detail. The blacksmith forms this detail using the power hammer and a specific dye to create the pattern on the hot steel. Care is taken to ensure the pattern is unique but not overpowering. Once 'fullered' - a process of adding the lines or dots - the plate has to be flattened out then welded to a larger disc and the base ring, all hand forged. The neck of the lamp is allows just the right angle of shade but the actually head of the lamp can be adjusted using our British-made, brass joint to fix the angle for the user.

The shade is specifically designed for this product by Sarah and made exclusively for us. A rustic stoneware ceramic shade with linear inscribed pattern comes in a natural glaze or choose the delicately stamped porcelain 'lace effect' shade which glows softly when the lamp is illuminated, showing the relief effect as the light comes through the thinnest parts of the ceramic.

The table lamp is available in either a traditional "natural black" or "light burnished steel" finish options and we can supply with either Brass or Nickel lampholder and fittings.
