Press release - Our designer ironwork is to be exhibited at Grand Designs Live

Yorkshire blacksmith Nigel Tyas will be exhibiting at Grand Designs Live in London this month.

The designer-maker will take a stand at the premier property event inspired by the popular Channel 4 TV programme fronted by Kevin McCloud.

Grand Designs Live is expected to attract 100,000 visitors to the EXCEL (April 29 – May 7). Nigel will showcase his latest range of hand-forged lighting, chandeliers, lamps, curtain poles, fire irons and homewares.

Nigel, whose business is based north of Sheffield, said “We are looking forward to meeting people at this high-profile national exhibition.

“We’ve always had a good customer base in London and the south east and it is currently growing as more people seem to be investing in loft and cellar conversions or extending their homes in ingenious ways; and we’ve been developing relationships with London-based interior designers, architects and electrical engineers.

“It will be good to meet new and existing online customers and partners at the show, as not many have the chance to visit our Yorkshire showroom and see our products ‘in the metal’ so to speak.”

Nigel Tyas Ironwork was founded by Nigel and partner Elizabeth Stocker in 2000 and now sells across the world.  This will be the first time they have exhibited at Grand Designs Live.

Amongst its new lighting designs on show will be the Bretton, which can be hung as a single pendant or as a group, either in a cluster or row formation. This striking feature light is created from a single piece of tapered steel curled into a conical shape around a squirrel cage LED bulb. It comes in a choice of burnished black or light burnished steel finish, and with silk braided cable in various colours.

Nigel said: “The Bretton is one of our contemporary designs which has a modern feel and pared down lines. We are traditional blacksmiths using traditional skills to make all our products, but aim to offer a diverse range of designs drawing inspiration from medieval, through to country cottage, stately home and modern industrial styles.

“We’ve built a reputation for quality, authenticity and craftsmanship over the last 17 years and apply this ethos to all our designs.”

Nigel and his team of experienced blacksmiths work within the company’s own forge in the village of Millhouse Green in the south Pennines above Sheffield. They sell direct to homeowners, plus interior designers, architects, conservation architects and electrical contractors.

Nigel’s products can be seen in the Tower of London, Leeds Castle in Kent and St Leonard’s parish church in Monyash, Derbyshire. They have featured on the TV sets of Emmerdale and Games of Thrones; and in films including The Other Boleyn Girl and Spectre. The company has exported as far afield as Australia, Japan, Canada and the Falkland Islands as well as across Europe and Scandinavia.

All of their work carries the prestigious ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark which recognises the quality of manufactured products and celebrates the company’s close association with the city’s metalworking heritage.
