The Maythorne

The Maythorne is a striking hand-forged wrought iron wall light, individually crafted by skilled blacksmiths in our Suffolk forge. An original Nigel Tyas design, its flowing form combines substantial forged iron with the delicate character of handblown glass.

The iron is heated in the forge before being drawn, shaped and twisted by hand, creating the sweeping curves and distinctive spiral that define the Maythorne. Look closely and the craftsmanship is there to be seen in the changing direction of the iron and the subtle character left by the forging process.

Creating the Maythorne requires both traditional blacksmithing skill and precision. The distinctive spiral is formed around a specially made mandrel, which acts as a former and allows the characteristic shape and proportions to be reproduced consistently. The mandrel provides the framework, but the work remains firmly in the hands of the blacksmith: the iron must be heated to the right temperature, manipulated, twisted and carefully shaped before being finished by hand.

It is this combination of skill, heat, force and considered craftsmanship that gives the Maythorne its character. Each light is individually made, with the forged iron retaining the marks and subtle variations that distinguish handcraft from mass production.

Finished in natural black, the Maythorne has a quiet sophistication that allows its sculptural form to take centre stage. It works particularly beautifully as a pair, where the flowing ironwork creates rhythm across a wall, or individually as a distinctive focal point.

The glass shade

The Maythorne is designed to be paired with our Handblown Half Frosted Bell Shade with Grey Trails, created specifically for the Maythorne and Greenmoor wall lights. Handblown and half frosted, the traditional bell-shaped shade features delicate grey trails within the glass and diffuses the light beautifully.

The softness and delicacy of the glass provide a striking contrast to the strength of the forged iron, bringing together two very different crafts in one considered design.
