Wrought Ironwork Finishes

Our guide to choosing your finish ...

Natural black

Our favourite finish. This natural forge black is the most traditional finish for forged iron and steel - it displays the finest textures of the metalwork. The surface is heated & oxidised to produce the subtle natural black of hand forged iron and then dipped in hot beeswax. As the wax cools it hardens to give a protective finish to the metal and can be left matt or buffed to a soft sheen.

As standard, some of our pieces are coated with a clear satin lacquer to seal and protect the metal surface.

Light burnished steel

A bright, contemporary variant of the natural black finish described above - this finish looks beautiful, particularly on some of our curtain pole finials and fire irons. Not to be confused with chrome or stainless steel, this is a subtle, natural buffed steel reminiscent of a mid-pewter colour.

All light burnished steel pieces (apart from fire irons) are sealed with a protective clear satin lacquer coating.

Light burnished steel fire irons are finished with a clear beeswax.

Hand forged details and polished highlights

On some of our ironwork, the 'Illions' range in particular, we like to highlight some of the markings left by the hammer strokes. To do this the highlighted sections are carefully buffed, to subtly bring out the brighter tones of the underlying metal. We then coat these items in the clear lacquer, to preserve the contrast of the finish.

Clear lacquer finish

As standard, some of our pieces are coated with a clear satin lacquer to seal and protect the metal surface.

This includes the following items :-

  • Apart from fire irons, all items with a light burnished steel surface finish
  • All items with hand forged details and polished highlights
  • All ‘Hartcliff’ chandeliers with 8 or more lights
  • Hood section of picture wall lights
  • All lamps - this is to prevent any risk of wax transfer onto furniture or flooring
  • All curtain holdbacks - this is to prevent any risk of wax transfer onto light coloured fabrics

Our clear lacquer finish can sometimes add slightly more of a sheen to the metal surface. If you would prefer a natural wax finish, please let us know when you place your order by calling us on 01226 766618 or by email to

Curtain poles for Tab-top and Eyelet Curtains

For Tab-top, Eyelet or any other curtains or drapes that are likely to come into direct contact with the curtain pole, we recommend our lacquered finish to prevent the risk of any transfer of wax to light coloured fabrics - please let us know your preference when you place your order .
