A South Yorkshire business which creates bespoke wrought iron products has appointed a new packing manager.
David Smyth, 17, has joined Nigel Tyas Ironwork, which is based in Millhouse Green near Penistone, to help with increasing demand.
David will be responsible for packing ironwork items, ranging from wrought iron hooks to 1.5 metre-wide chandeliers to customers around the UK and abroad.
At the age of 11, David took up woodturning in his leisure time and joins the firm with skills in creating intricate shapes and designs.
David, who lives in Grenoside, Sheffield, said: “It’s great to come to a workplace which is so different. There’s so much going on with our blacksmiths constantly working hard in the forge, designing and creating new products ready for me to wrap up before being sent off.”
Nigel Tyas Ironwork, which was set up in 2000 by Nigel Tyas and his wife Elizabeth Stocker, produces hand-made wrought iron products using traditional methods. Their products include light fittings, fireside irons and curtain poles and can be found all over the world in castles, churches, restaurants, hotels, heritage properties and family homes.
The company, which has grown its customer base and increased trade steadily over the past 16 years, employs eight members of staff, including four blacksmiths.
Nigel said: “David’s got to grips with how we operate really quickly and it’s great to have him on board in time for Christmas, as this time of the year always proves busy for us.
“With David, I feel we are getting more than just an extra pair of hands to help with packing. We’re hoping he can use his experience in woodturning to contribute to the team with some designs for new products in the future.”
