- Working hours -

Our office working hours are 9am - 5pm on weekdays and Saturday mornings by appointment.

- Showroom -

We have a small showroom next to the workshop with most of our standard products on permanent display.

We completely understand that it can be hard to buy without seeing our work first and we welcome visitors - we're proud of the quality of our work and will always be pleased to talk to you and answer any questions.

All we ask is that you call us first on 01226 766618 or email sales@nigeltyas.co.uk so we can ensure that we're here to meet you and give you our best attention.

- Directions -

We're located approximately 7.5 miles from junction 37 of the M1 and half a mile off the main A628 Manchester road on the B6106 road to Holmfirth.

Please bear in mind that most satellite navigation systems (and google maps) seem to put us on the wrong side of Lee Lane for some reason - keep an eye out for the millstones at the end of the driveway to Bullhouse Mill - we're on the LEFT hand side if you're travelling towards Holmfirth !

Follow the driveway down to Bullhouse Mill and then follow the one way system around the buildings until you reach our car park.

- Our history -

Nigel Tyas ironwork is a small independent company committed to keeping traditional metalworking skills alive in the UK. Based in the south Pennines north of Sheffield, the business was created in 2000 by Nigel Tyas and Elizabeth Stocker.

Our approach is simple and down to earth; we aim to provide you with the finest quality handforged interior ironwork for your home along with friendly and helpful customer service at all times.

Our eye-catching and artistic pieces combine Nigel's natural talent for design and proven skills in blacksmithing to create a beautiful and functional range of wrought ironwork for interior use.

We specialise in exclusive, traditionally made wrought iron lighting, wrought iron curtain poles and handforged fire irons. All are handmade to order in our own Yorkshire workshop and supplied direct to locations around the world.

- Environmental issues and Packaging -

We’re also doing our best to minimise the environmental impact of our business. Although we’re struggling to find a green solution to forging metal at 900°c, the heat controllers in our modern propane forges enable us to maintain efficient forging temperatures and are significantly more fuel efficient than traditional coke fired forges. Their excellent insulation conserves energy and we’re currently looking for ways to reuse waste heat from the forges to heat our office and showroom.

Bullhouse Mill is currently in the process of installing two wind turbines in the fields next to our workshop and also hydro turbines on the river Don which flows past the workshop. This will enable us to run our business on green electricity.

One area where we can do our bit for the environment is in packaging. We reuse boxes that come into the business and wherever possible use recycled material and paper shreddings to pack our own boxes. Your curtain poles will be packed in strong cardboard tubes which are reclaimed from our local carpet shops.

We're trying to find packaging materials that are either fully recycled or bio-degradable and that still offer sufficient protection to high value products as they move through the transportation system.

We hope to be able to eliminate the use of non-biodegradable bubble wrap and other plastic products in the near future and will update this information as soon as we have more news!

- Ethics and fair trade -

As a business we believe that our work should be produced as ethically and sustainably as possible and we work hard to ensure that all of our ironwork is produced and priced fairly and honestly.

We use the best quality materials and components in our products and source most of our supplies locally. It is important to us to support local manufacturing businesses, especially in view of Sheffield’s metalworking heritage.

We are sometimes asked about discounting our work. When we created the business it was always an important consideration that we would treat all of our customers fairly and that we would cost our work fairly in the first instance. We make everything to order in our own workshop and because of this we don't have the same margins on our work as companies who outsource their manufacturing overseas. It is very important to us as a business to keep traditional skills alive in the UK. The response that we get from our customers confirms that our handmade ironwork represents outstanding value for money . . . read more on our testimonials page.

We also believe in actively supporting our local post office and all of our Royal Mail dealings are handled by Millhouse Green Post Office.

At a domestic level we are fully committed to fair trade and the business is registered with the Fairtrade Foundation. We use ethically sourced tea, coffee and sugar in our workshop kitchen along with milk and buns from our local farms!
